What Is Rooted Childhood?
If you’re anything like me, you want to celebrate the seasons with your children through warm and cozy recipes, thoughtful poetry and creative handicrafts. But where do you begin? It can be challenging to find meaningful crafts that will teach your children new life skills (not to mention gathering the supplies and carving out the time). Let’s make our kids’ childhood special by creating the magic ourselves!
Rooted Childhood is an amazing guide created by my friend Meghann and it’s just darling! We use this program each week as part of our enrichment day in our home education program. But even if you’re not a homeschooling family, you will love her collection as a wonderful way to bond with your children! She has taken great care to create something beautiful that make it easy for parents to share quality time with their littles.
The Breakdown
Rooted Childhood contains recipes, poetry, and crafts. There is something for all ages and we have loved creating things we will use and display each year! There is no better way to usher in the seasons than with this guide. Meghann includes inspiring ideas, detailed instructions, and practical uses for the items you create.
You can go at your own pace and try variants of each project year after year. We will definitely be returning to these crafts each season and even making some as gifts! Below you’ll find an example of something we created from the last 3 months’ collection.
September Collection
Twine-Wrapped Mason Jar
Meghann reminds us that “filling our home with seasonal touches is a special way to welcome in a new season”. You COULD buy decorations at the store, by why would you? Making something together is so much more meaningful and shows children what they’re capable of. Decorations are not just for holidays, they are something you can display all year to delight in what each season has to offer. Intentional living starts with caring and embracing the changes around us.
We crafted this beautiful Twine-Wrapped Mason Jar using the materials and instructions provided. It turned out so lovely and will sit as part of our dining table centerpiece all year long. We change the flowers according to the blooms of the season and even added a candle for those dark and cozy nights.
October Collection
A Festive Celebration
It’s always a good time to celebrate! In the October issue of Rooted Childhood, you are inspired to plan a Book Character Party. This couldn’t have come at a better time as we had just finished reading Alice Through The Looking Glass as our monthly read aloud book. Rooted Childhood inspired us to celebrate by creating an Alice In Wonderland-themed tea party! We made our own invitations, invited the characters from the book and recited our favorite quotes and scenes from the story as we delighted in tea and treats! This is a beautiful way to bring books and stories into our living world by carrying on the energy we loved in the pages!
November Collection
Gratitude Journal
Autumn is a cozy season filled with graciousness and gratefulness. It’s nice to reflect and give thanks for what the year has brought us as it comes to a close. What better way to do that then make a Gratitude Journal!
Meghann provides instructions on how to create your own hand-sewn book. We are using our journal to remember our special moments as a sort of heirloom to look back on when the kids are older. Our journal is filling up with memories and will be something our family will always treasure because we made it together!
